The Contraption

There’s a contraption in my head. It can be felt in the back somewhere, even when it is in low power mode, waiting on standby. It used to kick into gear in those quiet moments between activities or conversation. When you stare into the world in a way that means you aren’t looking at it. When you remember there was a time before now and there will be some time after it. And you hear the device’s endless revolutions, the mechanism’s clicks and ticks, powered by some tiny detail that has been fed into it, and its movement wears you out. Somehow, though, I learnt to ignore the machine. Bad things may happen and it’s probably best to deal with them when they do.
